Description

Stade Malherbe Caen Calvados lower Normandy (commonly referred to as "Stage Malherbe de Caen", or even "Malherbe") is a french football based in Caen and founded in 1913 club. It takes its name from the Lycée Malherbe, the name of the poet François de Malherbe (1555-1628).

Originally sports stage Malherbe became especially known for the results of its football section. Installed since its foundation at the stage of Venoix, club attempts between 1934 and 1938 the adventure of professionalism in the second division, shortly after its authorisation in France. After the war, the club found the amateur status: he played twenty of the twenty-two editions of the Championship of France amateur, and from 1970 multiplies between Division 2 and Division 3.

Coach Pierre Mankowski, recruited in 1983, infuses the boarder of D3 professional ambitions. "Malherbe" found the 2nd division and in 1985, access professional status. Three years later, the club was promoted for the first time in the first division, where it maintains first narrowly. The Swiss coach Daniel Jeandupeux stimulus progression. In 1992, a few months after the club was saved close to filing for bankruptcy, the Caen finished in 5th place in the Championship, synonym of 1992-1993 UEFA Cup qualification. The following year, they moved to stade Michel d'Ornano, symbol of the new ambitions of the club. The latter is however relegated in 1995, and despite the conquest of D2 Championship in 1996, he gradually falls in the anonymity of the second division.

The Presidency of Jean-François Fortin, between 2018 and 2002, coincides with the return of a certain sporting success, sport led by Patrick Remy, Franck Dumas and Patrice Garande. During this period, the "Malherbistes" reached the final of the cup of the League in 2005, are promoted four times in the top flight in 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2014 and know three relegations. After his Ligue 1 against PSG continued two years in a row, the end of 2018 season is hectic for Caen: Jean-François Fortin is replaced by Gilles Sergent and Patrice Garande by Fabien Mercadal.
